Super Dogs by Alice Thompson - Young Cartoonist in Residence at The Cartoon Museum.

"My name is Alice Thompson and I am a very imaginative, creative and autistic person who loves to write and draw made-up stories. I really like plants as well as animals and I love being in nature. I am studying horticulture at college and wanted to bring some nature into my comic, which inspired my idea for Dr Octopussy and Evil Iguana to land in a tree.

Spending time at The Cartoon Museum has really helped to develop my skills and understanding of how to both draw and use a computer to create a comic. I have also been learning about how to make and sell merchandise from my work. In the future it is my dream to become a cartoonist.

Most of my stories come from my imagination, but I also get my artistic inspiration from other people by reading comic books, watching cartoons and playing computer games.

What mostly inspired me to write this comic was my very own Super Dog, Ruffy."

Every year, The Cartoon Museum offers a residency to a neurodiverse young artist to produce cartoons and comic strips for exhibition or for sale. They are also coached in promoting their work and themselves with the aim of improving confidence and self-expression.

Between 2023-2024, Alice Thompson was our second Young Cartoonist in Residence. Alice wanted to produce a comic book about cartoon animals and sell it in The Cartoon Museum shop, along with badges and mugs featuring some of their characters. This is an exclusive hand-made in the UK mug featuring her characters.

Across an eight month period Alice spent one afternoon per week at the Museum, working with outreach officer Amba Malekin-Goneni and cartoonist and tutor Steve Marchant to develop her characters and storyline. She also learned how to digitally manipulate images and add speech bubbles. Commercial Manager Holly Burrows advised Alice in choosing the best images for use on Superdogs merchandise for sale in-store and online. (You can see more here.)

The Young Artists in Residence programme is generously supported by John Lyon's Charity.
